Furniture Glyph: Ark Bed
This four-poster bed acts like an autonomous ark: it is symmetrical about its two axes; it floats unusually high off the floor; and it is spatially self-contained. The four posts inscribe a cubic volume from which the cantilevering headboard, or bow, and its corresponding footboard, or stern, project.
This bed has two distinct places for bodies. The centered voids in the headboard and footboard mark a division like the bundling boards of puritanical America that prevented physical contact while maintaining personal intimacy. In the Ark/Bed, the center is place of union when the sea of love is placid. But when the sea is stormy, it is everyone for themselves.
